Life-saving plasma protein therapies start with the donor. Donors are as diverse as society itself. PPTA members depend on healthy donors, who commit to a lengthy medical screening process, hours in the donation center, and a long-term dedication, to make regular donations.
Donors undergo health screenings, including regular exams, questionnaires and testing prior to the donation procedure. Plasma donors understand the need for the sustained supply of plasma to ensure the adequate production of these vital plasma protein therapies.
PPTA members collect source plasma through a procedure called Plasmapheresis. During this process, a sterile, enclosed system allows blood to be drawn into a highly-specialized machine that separates the plasma from the blood cells and platelets, which are then returned to the donor. Each plasma donation undergoes rigorous laboratory testing, before entering the production process.
