EPA: Czech Registry is Positive Step in Ensuring Donor Safety

10 June 2025

The European Plasma Alliance (EPA) welcomes the Czech government’s implementation of its new donor registry as a critical step in ensuring donor safety. A well-managed, centralized registry prioritizes donor safety by enhancing medical oversight so that legally approved donation frequency limits are upheld.

This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving its health care infrastructure so that every step in the donation process prioritizes donor well-being and strengthens the integrity of the plasma collection system. This development has the potential to inspire similar systems across Europe, as a registry’s success relies on a governmental commitment to proper implementation, enforcement, and continuous improvement. The European Plasma Alliance (EPA) and its members have underscored the importance of “establishing clear rules and mechanisms that safeguard the well-being of donors” while maintaining a stable plasma supply that meets patient need. This approach in the Czech Republic will make the new registry a meaningful safeguard for donor safety, not just an administrative tool.

While this registry is a step in the right direction, it is essential that the government follows through with strong oversight, transparent governance, and collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the system operates as intended. The registry is expected to adhere to the highest data protection standards, fully complying with GDPR to safeguard donor privacy. EPA believes this is of utmost importance, as donors must have absolute confidence that their sensitive medical and personal information is handled securely, without risk of misuse.

EPA and its members are optimistic about the opportunities this registry presents and are confident that, through strong public-private collaboration, Czechia can create a trusted system that prioritizes donor safety and well-being while sustaining the critical supply of life-saving plasma. Engagement with all stakeholders — public authorities and collectors private plasma collectors, and medical professionals —is key to ensuring a balanced approach that protects donors while securing a reliable plasma supply. EPA stands ready to be a trusted partner in this effort and look forward to contributing to a safer, more efficient and effective plasma donation landscape in Europe.
